TCN commences implementation of SCADA to monitor grid – MD

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN),  says it has commenced the implementation of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to enable real-time monitoring and control of power grid.

Mr Sule Abdulaziz, the Managing  Director of TCN, said this when members of the House of Representatives Committee on Power went on an  oversight function to the company on Monday in Abuja.

Abdulaziz said that the technological advancement would significantly improved grid stability, reduce transmission losses, and allowed for quicker response to faults and disturbances.

He said that TCN had also  implemented an  effective Frequency Control and Load Balancing, as evident in the drastic reduction in the instances of partial and full system collapses.

”There is increased grid visibility as the in-house engineers made use of  Internet of Things (IoT) with the implementation of Automatic Meter Reading Infrastructure.

”There is overhaul digital transformation, using internal homegrown solutions and vendor-procured applications to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of TCN wide operations,”he said.

According to him,  there is a designated web-portal for managing the output of generations and allocations to Distribution Companies (DisCos).

Abdulaziz said that the achievements of the TCN under his watch, have been significant in strengthening the transmission infrastructure and improving grid stability.

”However, sustaining these efforts requires continued investment, capacity building and collaborative partnerships.

”The Federal Government support is crucial in bolstering TCN’s initiatives and providing the necessary resources to build a resilient and efficient transmission network.

”This will enable the company   to meet the nation’s growing power demands and contribute to sustainable development and together, we can achieve a brighter and energy-abundant future for the country,”he said.

On his part, Rep Victor Nwokolo, Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Power,  urged TCN to engage the state governments on  Right of Way(ROW).

Nwokolo said it should also discuss the issue of security of power infrastructure with the governors as a lot of the structures were destroyed.

Speaking on the issue of ground rent, he said that the House would look into it and ensure that such rents are paid from when the infrastructure were put on ground.
