Yobe State House of Assembly has called on the executive arm of government to take proactive measures against the impending flood disaster in the State.
The House made the call in a motion of urgent public importance moved by 14 members of the House representing Karasuwa, Bade central, Yunusari, Jakusko, Gujba, Geidam south and Nangere.
Other members are those of Nguru central, Damagum, Gulani, Bursari, Tarmuwa, Geidam central, among others.
Moving the motion on behalf of the 14 members, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Ya’u Usman Dachia said the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has predicted that Yobe State would be among the states that may experience flood disaster.
He stressed the need for the government to ensure that all drainages are cleared, adding those residing in flood prone areas should also be evacuated to safer places.
“Many people in the state have not yet recovered from last year’s flooding which affected our respective constituencies where property worth millions of naira were destroyed”, he said.
The lawmaker commended the state Governor, Mai Mala Buni for his effort in controlling the perennial flood disaster and stressed the need for traditional rulers to continue to enlighten their subjects to avoid dumping of refuse in drainages and other strategic waterways in their respective domains.
Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker of the House, Right Honorable Chiroma Buba Mashio stressed the need for the National Assembly members from the State to escalate the matter for the federal government’s intervention.
