TAF Africa, a Non-Government Organisation, on Thursday, sensitised Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Damare camp, Girei Local Government of Adamawa on effective participation in electoral process.
Thetheme of the sensitisation is: “Enhancing IDPs Participation in the Electoral Process.”
Mr George Dominic, the Assistant Programme Manager, TAF Africa, said the aim of the exercise was for IDPs and vulnerable people to know their rights in electoral process.
According to him, the organisation is funded by the European Union to support democratic governance in Nigeria.
Dominic noted that the general elections had gone and the local government election and by-elections may come up.
He called on the IDPs to understand that they are human beings and have the right to vote for candidates of their choice.
“The Electoral Act states categorically the role of INEC on the need to carry vulnerable people along on electoral process and to make it easier for them to participate,” he said.
The assistant programme manager urged IDPs who looked like underage during voter registration to go with their birth certificates to avoid any confusion.
Mr Richard Haruna, an IDP, called on INEC to improve voter education, especially for those in the camps, adding that during the 2023 general elections at unit 001 in the community, about 400 votes were cast and over 100 were invalid.
In his remarks, Abdu Bello, the community leader, represented by Sallau Isa, appreciated the organisation for the sensitisation.
He promised that other displaced persons would be enlightened on the knowledge received from the organisation for them to fully participate iin subsequent elections.
