Tackle insecurity, economic hardship in 2024 — Ex-NAWOJ President tells Tinubu

As we bid farewell to a challenging year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the security apparatus in the country have been called upon to be far more proactive in ensuring the safety and property of the citizens.

Former National President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and former Vice President, Gender Council, International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Alhaja Fatimah Abdul-Kareem who gave the charge in her new year message to Nigerians noted that year 2023 is a year that will never be forgotten by average Nigerians especially the less-privileged which was orchestrated by the removal of fuel subsidy by the present administration.

Alhaja Abdul-Kareem who commended the indomitable spirit of Nigerians at this trying period and capacity to endure and rise above all those adversities urged the federal government to put in more efforts so as to nip the insecurity in the bud aimed at putting fresh hopes on the faces of average Nigerians.

“Looking back on the trials and tribulations the nation faced towards the 2023 general elections, I am humbled by the resilience displayed by Nigerian communities nationwide. It is a testament to our strength and a showcase of God’s blessing on our nation to always stand firm and emerge stronger above challenges.

“The travails of 2023 have taught us that unity and togetherness are more important than ever. That no nation can overcome obstacles in disunity; as nation-building requires collective effort, understanding, and tolerance.

“Now, as we enter the new year, let us carry this invaluable lesson with us – to further boost the spirit of collaboration and compassion among our diverse ethnic nationalities. Let us pledge to foster an environment where diversity is celebrated, where empathy guides our actions, and where inclusivity is the norm. By standing together as one, we can surmount any adversity that comes our way,” she said.

Alhaja Abdul-Kareem stressed that as various political choices have been put in place at various levels from Local to the Federal, the former National President of NAWOJ enjoined Nigerians to hold onto hope and support the government at all levels, as well as be more patriotic to the country than ever before so as to be able to overcome obstacles and build a brighter future together as a nation.

She called on Nigerians to ignite the flame of hope within their hearts and share it with others, inspiring them to believe in the power of a better tomorrow.

In the wake of the dastardly killings in Plateau State, and the spate of insecurity in Nigeria generally, the former Vice President Gender Council, IFJ appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to commit more resources in the fight against insurgency in the country and be more vigilant and committed to the safety of lives and properties of the people, to ensure peace, security and stability of Nigeria at large.

While commiserating with the people of Plateau State, especially the communities and families of the victims and the people of Kaduna State and the communities as well as the families of the victims of the unfortunate drone strike in the hands of Nigerian Army that left hundreds dead and families bereaved, Alhaja Abdul-Kareem prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims in the two incidents and similar incidents around the country, seeking the face of God to give the families, relatives and friends they all left behind and Nigeria as a nation; the fortitude to bear the loss.

She therefore commended President Tinubu and every Nigerian for the commitment and endurance in the last year and enjoined them to be hopeful for a better nation and as well approach all issues with unity and sincerity of purpose as we enter 2024.
