Superbowl with more than 20,000 fans as NFL invites health workers

Superbowl LV will be watched by 22,000 fans in Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium, American football’s National Football League (NFL) said on Friday.

The figure of fans includes 7,500 coronavirus vaccinated health care workers who will attend for free.

The NFL said the gesture was to “thank and honour” the workers for their “continued extraordinary service” during the coronavirus pandemic.

While the majority of those invited will come from the Florida area, all 32 NFL teams have been given the opportunity to reward those from their local markets.

“These dedicated health care workers continue to put their own lives at risk to serve others, and we owe them our ongoing gratitude,” said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

“We hope in a small way that this initiative will inspire our country and recognise these true American heroes.

“This is also an opportunity to promote the importance of vaccination and appropriate health practices, including wearing masks in public settings.”

An additional 14,500 additional fans will also attend the 70,000 capacity stadium while following enhanced hygiene protocols.

“These include “mandatory mask-wearing, social-distancing, and other measures to prevent the spread of the virus,” said the NFL.

“This includes podded seating, touchless in-stadium experiences at concessions, restrooms, and security checkpoints, as well as controlled entry and egress.”
