Student mobilisation: UNICAL sets up panel to investigate extortion
…Recalls list sent to law school by estranged Professor
The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has set up a panel to investigate alleged extortion on student mobilisation to the Law School.
The institution has also recalled the lists of students sent by the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law of the university, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, to the Nigerian Law School in the last two years for scrutiny.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Florence Obi, revealed this to the press Monday.
Obi said, “Management resolved with the staff on the need for some basic changes to be effected in the faculty to avoid the continuous overbearing influence and power of any Dean of the Faculty of Law over the students.”
Other measures to be taken, according to the VC, include the formation of a committee to oversee student mobilisation to the Law School, a review and possible recall of the students’ list sent to Law School, the removal of the two examination officers from office, and the formation of a Result Vetting Committee.
Obi further directed that a panel should investigate the alleged extortions perpetrated by Ndifon and that, if found guilty, he would be required to reimburse all illicit payments collected from students under various sub-heads.
