Strike: FG, ASUU meeting inconclusive, adjourned till Sept 6

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have agreed to reconvene their discussions on September 6, 2024, following a meeting on Wednesday that both parties described as productive. 

The meeting aimed to address unresolved issues and prevent a potential strike in Nigeria’s public universities.

Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, expressed optimism about the progress made, stating, “We have had a very fruitful discussion and worked out modalities to address the issues. We are coming back on September 6 to report on the progress and continue resolving the issues.”

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, echoed this sentiment, noting, “We have reviewed the government’s actions since our last meeting and agreed to give them time to act on these issues. We hope for an amicable resolution to ensure a smooth academic environment for Nigerian students.”

The discussions were held at the Federal Ministry of Education’s conference hall and included ASUU’s executive members and former presidents, led by Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi. 

While both sides were tight-lipped about specific agreements reached, the focus remains on preventing a nationwide strike and ensuring stability in the academic sector.
