The government of the State of Osun has warned its citizens to stop daring the COVID-19 pandemic by defying the safety protocols specified by the government, adding that the deadly virus is spreading at an alarming rate both in the country and across the world.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs Funke Egbemode, Osun government reiterated that the state had reached a point where citizens must take personal responsibility for their safety, citing some examples around the country and across the world.
The statement reads in part: “The government is worried about how citizens are conducting themselves as if COVID-19 is no longer a reality.
“By way of reminder, there is already a second wave of the pandemic, and this time around, it is a more deadly variant that is sweeping across the globe .
“For instance, veteran American talk show host and former CNN interviewer, Larry King, has been hospitalised for more than a week on account of COVID-19.
“Here in Nigeria, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), on Saturday night, announced 576 new COVID-19 infections, which takes the total confirmed cases in the country to 89,163.
“According to NCDC, the new cases reported were recorded in 14 states of the federation and FCT, and Osun was numbered among the states where the cases were recorded.
“Already, the Federal Government is taking more stringent measures against the infection by banning not less than 100 passengers who evaded the compulsory COVID-19 test after returning into the country.
“The government of Osun is also firming up measures to ensure the safety of its citizens, But is calling on citizens to take personal responsibility for their safety to avoid a tragic fallout.
“It is imperative that we observe social distancing, avoid crowded places, wash our hands regularly with soap and water. We must disinfect your hands and surfaces with sanitizers and disinfectants and wear our nose masks and face shields whenever in public places.”
Egbemode further said, “With the cooperation of our citizens, Osun will be able to keep the virus at bay and resume our lives with as little restriction as possible.”
