Sitting for long at a spot could impair your health, Ogun medical expert counsels workers

Bankole Taiwo, Abeokuta

A Medical expert and Head of Occupational Health and Safety unit, Ogun State Ministry of Health, Dr. Festus Adetonwa has said sitting on a spot for a long time can be detrimental to workers’ health.

Adetonwa stated this in Abeokuta, at a sensitisation programme for workers in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to commemorate World Health and Safety Day with the theme: ‘’Safety and Healthy Working Environment, A Fundamental Human Right’’.

He noted that public and civil servants should be conscious of the sedentary aspect involved in the process of carrying out their official duties, adding that the sensitisation would go a long way to raise workers’ awareness on healthy lifestyles, towards preventing diseases and maintaining the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being.

The medical expert pointed out that early diagnosis could help prevent health challenges like cancer, hypertension, diabetes, among others, urging the staffers of the agency to engage in regular medical check-ups like blood pressure, glucose check, urinalysis and blood assessment and exercise for effective service delivery.

In her remarks, the Director of Administration and Supplies in the Ministry, Mrs. Oladunni Adetona commended the Ministry of Health for the initiative, adding that the programme would spur workers to pay more attention to their health and well-being for improved performance.

Adetona assured that the management would continue to interact with the staffers while encouraging them on the need for regular medical check-ups.
