Niger State Governor, Muhammed Umaru Bago has warned Corps members to desist from indulging in drug abuse, trafficking, cybercrime and other negative acts portraying the scheme in a bad light in the country.
The Governor handed down the warning through Secretary to the Government, SSG, Abubakar Usman during the closing ceremony of the 2023 Batch B, Stream One orientation course of corps members deployed to the state as well as those dislodged from FCT at Paiko local government area of the state.
He observed that being corps members does not confer on them immunity from the legal consequences of any wrongdoing in the course of their service.
Bago also urged the corps members to be good ambassadors of the scheme while calling on them to be role models to younger ones in their areas of primary assignment.
He noted,” You must remember that being a corps member does not confer on you immunity from the legal consequences of any wrongdoing.
“I, therefore, enjoin you to be law-abiding and serve as role models to younger ones in communities you are posted to for your primary assessment”.
The governor also enjoined them to avoid the use of social media for ethnic prejudices, rumour peddling and hate speeches and ensure they use it to promote unity and peace in the country.
He then appealed to employers to accept corps members posted to their organizations and make necessary provisions for their welfare.
The Niger State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Abdulwahab Alidat, in her address earlier, called on the corps members to accept their posting in good faith and discharge their duties as guided by the provisions of the NYSC Act and Bye-laws.
Alidat advised,” I urge you to desist from meddling in local politics, and embark on personal and group Community Development Service Projects to uplift the living standards of people of your host communities”
“Be security conscious, avoid attending night parties, visitations of dangerous places and acceptance of car rides and gifts from strangers”.
