Scarcity: FRSC warns motorists against travelling with petrol jerrycans

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ondo State Command has issued a stern warning to motorists about the dangers of transporting petrol in jerrycans while travelling, citing the risk of fire hazards.

The State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, conveyed this message during an interview on Monday in Akure.

He observed that some drivers, due to fuel scarcity, have taken to carrying petrol in jerrycans, a practice he described as hazardous.

On Sunday, the FRSC apprehended a commercial bus that was transporting three jerrycans, each containing 25 litres of petrol. The bus was travelling from Lagos State to Jalingo in Taraba.

Ibitoye clarified that while the command ensured the driver refuelled his vehicle before continuing the journey, road safety regulations prevent them from impounding such vehicles.

He commended the bus passengers for raising an alarm and contacting the FRSC national headquarters, which prompted a nationwide alert.

“Ibitoye urged passengers to actively participate in road safety efforts rather than distracting the driver. Their involvement is crucial for preventing accidents.

“He emphasised that passengers should discourage drivers from transporting fuel in jerrycans, as this could lead to catastrophic fires if a spark occurs.”

The FRSC advises waiting in fuel queues rather than buying petrol in jerrycans to avoid potentially deadly explosions inside vehicles.

The command is dedicated to educating motorists and ensuring they avoid practices that could lead to accidents.

Ibitoye’s message to Nigerians is clear: “do not carry fuel in jerrycans inside your vehicle to avoid fatal incidents.”

He stressed the importance of “prioritising safety over convenience, to prevent tragedies on the road and protect all road users.”
