Residents of Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Tuesday filed out in their numbers to protest against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Nigeria Police Force against the unconstitutional directives issued by the governor.
The youths marched to the Police Headquarters in Moscow road, Port Harcourt to register their displeasure over the activities of SARS operatives and police brutality in general.
This is coming despite a ban by the state Governor, Nyesom Wike.
Wike had banned anti-SARS protest, following the dissolution of the unit by the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu.
The governor’s ban was made public in a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications.
Youths clamouring for a total ban of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have stormed major roads in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Joined by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports,Seun Fakorede and a host of celebrities, our correspondent monitoring the protest report that the protesters are blocked the Iwo Road interchange in Ibadan and are headed towards the government Secretariat.
Some of the protesters protested at the University of Ibadan gate and other strategic areas in the state capital.
The protesting youths carried various placards demanding a total ban of SARS.
Subsequently, the Governor joined the protest and informed protesters that he is not against #EndSARS but he is more interested in the total reformation of the police force.
According to him, “It is not only ending SARS, every Nigerian should support the total reform of the police.”
“ We shouldn’t make a mistake, if we #EndSars as they have done, the same police people would be used to form another body. This is what I have always called for.”
Similarly in Ibadan, the youths joined by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports,Seun Fakorede, soldiers belonging of ‘operation burst’ and a host of celebrities clamoured for a total ban of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) stormed major roads in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital beginning from the Iwo Road interchange to the government Secretariat. Some of the protesters also protested at the University of Ibadan gate and other strategic areas in the state capital.
Residents of Enugu state and Uyo, Akwa Ibom State also joined the rest of Nigerians, Tuesday morning, for the #EndSARS protests that have rocked Nigeria since last week. In Enugu celebrity singer Chinedu Izuchukwu Okoli aka Flavour, Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, aka Phyno and another Igbo rapper Zoro joined in for the peaceful protest that was held.
