Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged Nigerian youths to harness technology and their innate talents to achieve self-sustainability.
Speaking at a National Youth Symposium in Lagos, commemorating the 60th birthday of his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu emphasised the need for youths to surround themselves with motivational individuals and actively seek their paths to self-reliance.
“The youths should strive to be the best versions of themselves, utilizing their gifts to benefit society and garner recognition,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He emphasised the importance of preparedness, stating, “We must be prepared for the opportunities that we see. The idea that opportunity exists is true. Our gifts, when developed, will assuredly bring us before kings.”
The Governor stressed that collective responsibility is crucial for national progress, saying, “We must be each other’s keepers and responsible partners. This is what it means to be part of a nation.”
In his address, Dr. Hamzat encouraged the youths to seize available opportunities and invest in skill development to foster self-reliance.
“Getting the right education matters in today’s job market. It is no longer what you know, but what you can do,” Hamzat noted, emphasising the significance of combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills.
Further, he highlighted Lagos State’s commitment to youth-focused initiatives and urged collaboration between the government, private sector, and young people to nurture talent and innovation.
Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Self-reliant youths will fuel economic growth, reduce poverty, and contribute to a stable society.”
He called for a foundational shift in strategic thinking and cultural attitudes to empower the youth to take charge of their destinies.
“We must learn to depend on our resourcefulness and resilience,” Fagbohun added, emphasising the need for the government to equip youths with relevant skills suited for today’s workforce.
This gathering of esteemed speakers and committed participants reflects a growing recognition of the pivotal role of youth empowerment in driving Nigeria’s future development.
