Sanwo-Olu, others laud Okupe’s legacy

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, along with other dignitaries, paid homage on Thursday to the late Dr Doyin Okupe, former Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo.

They commended Okupe’s contributions during a Service of Songs organised by Trinity House at Victoria Island, Lagos.

Okupe also served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, described Okupe as a distinguished statesman, seasoned public affairs analyst, and dedicated public servant.

He observed that the former presidential spokesman devoted his life to service and the betterment of humanity.

“Okupe was a respected statesman and political commentator whose influence on Nigeria’s politics spanned decades.

“His unwavering commitment to democracy, governance, and national progress transcended political affiliations.

“He was an exceptional Nigerian, a shrewd politician, and a gentleman who relentlessly advocated for a stronger nation.

“I admired him for over three decades, but we became even closer in the last five years. He was a man of integrity and a dependable leader,” Sanwo-Olu remarked.

The governor also extended his sympathies to the Okupe family.

“Your father was a remarkable man who led a purposeful life. He was a devoted family man and an inspiration to many.

“On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, I offer my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your beloved patriarch,” he stated.

Also speaking, President Bola Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Media Affairs, Mr Tunde Rahman, described Okupe’s demise as a personal loss to Tinubu, the political class, and Nigeria.

Despite their differing political perspectives, Rahman noted that the President and Okupe shared profound mutual respect and admiration.

“Okupe’s passing is deeply personal for President Tinubu and a significant loss to the nation, particularly within the political landscape. He was an astute politician, strategist, and communication expert.

“He was resolute in his decision to support President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. He even established an office and assembled a team for the campaign.

“He did this because he believed in the President’s leadership. He recognised his policies and vision as crucial for national renewal,” Rahman stated.

Okupe’s children and grandchildren described him as a unifier and a loving father who wholeheartedly committed himself to his family, church, and country.

They pledged to uphold his principles and continue his legacy.

Among the dignitaries present were former Anambra Governor, Mr Peter Obi, former Lagos Deputy Governor, Mr Femi Pedro, and Ovation Magazine publisher, Chief Dele Momodu.

Also in attendance were members of the Lagos State cabinet.
