The Governor of Ekiti, Edo, Kaduna and Lagos, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Godwin Obaseki, Nasir El-Rufai have insisted that the decentralization of policing system in Nigeria is long overdue.
The four Governors unequivocally said during a panel session yesterday at the Fountain Economic Summit in Ado-Ekiti.
On his part, Governor Sanwo-Olu said, “One point that we should not drop an eye on is the issue of state police.”
He insisted that, “We’ve all talked about it. We should not let this opportunity slip by again.”
The host Governor, Kayode Fayemi supported Sanwo-Olu assertion, claiming “that we need multi-level policing arrangements.”
While speaking his mind, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki noted that “we will not be able to run away from the fact that states will now have to play much more role in the entire value chain for security.”
Meanwhile, the Governor of Kaduna State, who had earlier apologized for joining the summit late posited that the importance of segmenting police work should even be extended to the local government level.
He said, “The APC through federalism committee has made the case that we need multi-level policing, not just state police, even local government police.”
