The new Executive Secretary/CEO (ES/CEO) of Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Mr Emmanuel Jime visited Port Harcourt, the Zonal Headquarters of the South South, otherwise referred to as Eastern ports.

Addressing representatives of the Eastern ports, comprising Rivers (Port Harcourt), Calabar, Warri Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Edo, the ES said he was impressed with the performance of the Zone despite all odds.

He admitted that the Port Harcourt Office was not befitting as a Zonal Directorate and assured that a prompt action will be taken to address the situation.

The ES however urged the zone to vigorously pursue their goals, irrespective of the daunting challenges facing them.

Jime further assured his hosts that his leadership will tackle the problems headlong, especially those ones that fall under his purview, while applying advocacy for others.

“We commend you for all your achievements despite the challenges. I assure you that I will address the challenges you have pointed out, especially the ones that are within our purview. The ones outside our jurisdiction, will be addressed through advocacy.

“Welfare of staff will be paramount in my administration,” the Executive Secretary said.

Earlier, the South South Zonal Coordinator, Mr Ogor Izah welcomed the ES to the Zone, thanking him for coming to take an on-the-spot assessment of their operations.

He identified good working relationship between the zone and sister government agencies, including other stakeholders as one of his achievements.

Handling of complaints from various stakeholders, sensitization on the implementation of the Nigerian Port Process Manual(NPPM) across the Eastern ports and engagement with shipping companies/agents as regards the problem of extortions by some government agencies, among others as his other achievements.

The Zonal Coordinator pinpointed shallow port channels, funding, deplorable infrastructure and insecurity as some of the challenges militating against smooth operations in the zone.

He appealed to the ES to come to their rescue.

Highlight of the meeting was commissioning of the Standing Port Task Team for the implementation of the Nigerian Port Process Manual (NPPM) by the ES, Mr Jime.
