Rivers distributes presidential palliative to flood victims

By Barth Ndubuwah, Port Harcourt

The Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee has begun distributing the Presidential Palliatives to people affected by the devastating floods in the state.

During the distribution of relief items to the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Non-Indigenes, the Rivers State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, revealed that the committee had prepared 2,700 bags of 50kg rice, 1,070 Insecticide-Treated Nets, tomatoes, and other essential relief items for distribution.

Professor Odu disclosed that although the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had predicted that 18 Local Government Areas would be affected by flooding, the committee, having already distributed relief materials to these areas, decided to expand the distribution to 24 portions – 23 for the LGAs and one for Non-Indigenes in the state.

“We are going to distribute them to 23 Local Government Areas, plus one for the Non-Indigenes, so they can be captured. We intentionally included them, and although there have already been palliatives for the flood-impacted areas, we decided to ensure this batch reaches all 23 LGAs and Non-Indigenes. We want to make sure they receive it before Christmas, so it becomes part of their Christmas,” Professor Odu explained.
