The Andoni Local Government Legislative Council in Rivers State said it has abolished the by-law on the payment of pension to ex-political office holders in the Area.

Leader of the Legislative Council, Miss Sheila Nte stated this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, while commenting on their one-year anniversary.

Nte, who represents Unyeada Ward 6, said that the councillors also scrapped some laws considered obnoxious and inimical to the development of the area.

According to her, the decision to scrap the laws was in keeping to the commitment of the local council officials to focus on the welfare of the people.

“The inhumane pensions law was abolished following an Executive Bill sponsored by the Council Chairman, Mr Erastus Awortu,” the House Leader said.

She said that the ‘Political Office Holders Post Service and Other Benefits Prohibition By-law No.1, 20212 , replaced the old law, and gave no pensions approval for political office holders.

“The new law has freed the council’s resources which has now been channelled to more impactful projects as visibly seen in the area of road construction, water supply and other projects initiated by the present administration,” she said

Nte said that the Conservation of Andoni Forest and Wildlife By-Law No1., 2022, prohibited pouching in order to boost wildlife conservation in the area.

The house leader also said that they had passed another law to boost the council’s revenue,as well as the appropriation law.

According to her, some of the key projects captured in the council’s 2022 budget included the ongoing construction of Asarama Road and the concrete bride in Unyeada Community.

Nte expressed satisfaction with the progress of various projects, including the reopening of Ngo General Hospital, which was shut by the past administration.

“We embarked on a tour of projects by this administration and we are impressed by the level of successful delivery recorded in terms of upgrade of facilities at the hospital, Legislative Assembly building, potable water supply and construction of roads and culverts,” she added.
