The residents of Ajewole and Obalabi street in the area of Ikotun Lagos state have called for the government intervention over the hazardous impact of a chemical reprocessing plant in the area.
The residents who in a chat with our correspondent lamented that remission of chemical gas within the residential area has led to a recent fire hazard that caused a whole storey building to be burnt down recently.
They further informed that the chemical that has been moved to an event centre in the area following the destruction of the former building where it was used for production is capable of causing cancer, air pollution and fire hazard including noise pollution during the operation and other issues that are harmful for human health.
The residents urged the Lagos state government to speedily intervene before the activities consume lives and properties of people in the area.
Speaking on behalf of the community a resident who pleaded anonymity said the “magnitude of fire destruction to a building in the area recently where a chemical raw materials are reprocessed into finished products at Obalabi street Ikotun Lagos is worrisome and we need the intervention of the government before our properties are destroyed.
“We also want the government to know that following the destruction of the building, the owner of the chemical gas has since moved his production to an event center in the area,which is dangerous to our health, lives and properties.
“We don’t know if the government gave him a license to carry out such activities in a residential area like this and under whose supervision we can’t keep our hands crossed and watch our lives and properties destroyed,” he said
