Reps member refutes Obasanjo’s statement, asserts that they do not determine their own salaries and allowances

The House of Representatives has rejected former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s claim that lawmakers set their own salaries and allowances.

Deputy Spokesperson Philip Agbese addressed this issue on Sunday in Abuja, calling Obasanjo’s accusations false and misleading. Agbese emphasized that the members of the House are motivated by patriotism and a genuine commitment to serving the Nigerian people, not self-interest.

He pointed out that the current 10th House of Representatives differs significantly from Obasanjo’s era and suggested that Obasanjo is judging the present based on past experiences.

“As a parliament, we have made substantial efforts to maintain the highest standards of accountability and transparency in all our activities,” Agbese said. He speculated that Obasanjo’s criticisms might stem from previous conflicts with the National Assembly during his presidency.

Agbese noted that under Speaker Tajudeen Abass, the House is committed to the welfare of Nigerians and is focused on serving their collective interests.

“In the 10th House of Representatives, we are dedicated to our commitments to the Nigerian people. The era of serving narrow interests is over. We are here to serve the people and their collective interests,” he asserted.

Regarding allegations that President Bola Tinubu had given N100 million and N200 million to National Assembly members, Agbese denied these claims, asserting that Tinubu’s support was earned through diplomacy and consultation.
