The House of Representatives has taken a significant step toward addressing Nigeria’s skilled manpower shortage by passing the second reading of a bill to establish an Entrepreneur University in the Ibile, Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The bill, sponsored by Babajimi Benson and Paul Kalejaiye, seeks to enhance entrepreneurial education and harness the creative potential of the youth.
During a press briefing on Thursday at the National Assembly, Benson highlighted the urgent need for specialised institutions to equip young Nigerians with the skills necessary for successful entrepreneurship.
“Nigeria, with its vast and youthful population, is endowed with immense potential for economic growth and development. However, there is a pressing need for institutions that focus on providing the skills, knowledge, and mindset required to succeed,” he stated.
The proposed Ibile Entrepreneur University aims to foster innovation and business acumen among students, providing both practical and theoretical knowledge in entrepreneurship and business management.
Benson emphasised that the university would play a crucial role in nurturing entrepreneurial talents, promoting research, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.
Kalejaiye added his concerns regarding conventional universities, stating, “Our conventional universities have turned out graduates who are not employable.
“We have moved into an era of entrepreneurial development, where graduates must be equipped to start their own businesses rather than seeking traditional white-collar jobs.”
The university is envisioned as a hub for skill acquisition and self-employment training, addressing contemporary manpower needs.
The House plans to hold a public hearing to gather input from stakeholders before the bill’s final reading.
