A recent report from the Tripartite Committee, commissioned by President Bola Tinubu, reveals that despite the newly signed National Minimum Wage setting a minimum pay of N70,000 for Nigerian workers, not all are covered. Initially negotiated down from N250,000 by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, the wage applies broadly, but exceptions exist per the report.
It specifies exemptions based on business size, revenue, and type of work, including nano, micro, and startup businesses, as well as those regulated by other legislation. Seasonal, maritime, and aviation workers are also excluded. Despite Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s assertion of universal application, the report paints a nuanced picture, highlighting challenges in compliance and fairness, particularly in the informal sector.
Critically, the committee questions exemptions, citing discrepancies in earnings and fairness issues highlighted by the International Labour Organization.
