Rep. A’ishatu Dukku, the Chairman, House Committee on Electoral Matters, has tasked security agencies to observe the rule of engagement during the 2023 general election.
Dukku said this at a seminar on the role of security personnel and interagency collaboration in the electoral process, organised by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) foundation in Abuja on Tuesday.
The lawmaker said that providing a secured atmosphere for the electorate to perform their civic duties of electing candidates of their choice was key in the integrity of any election.
Integrity of election could be determined by the security situation at any given time as the electorate go about choosing their leaders without hindrance.
She said that security operatives should also have general knowledge of the components of electoral offences.
Rep. Abdurrazak Namdas, the Chairman, House Committee on Army, stressed the need for security agencies to build on the successes recorded in the fight against insecurity.
Mrs Marija Peran, the Country Representative, KAS foundation in Nigeria, said the growing security challenge in the country, could undermine the 2023 election results.
Peran called for proactive measures toward ensuring hitch-free and credible 2023 general election.
