The Osun State Council of Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON) has enjoined the state government to, as a matter of urgency, implement its decision to recruit professional counsellors in all secondary schools.
The association averred that the immediate deployment of counselling psychologists to all secondary schools across the state would wind down the rate of criminalities.
The Chairman of Counselling Association of Nigeria, Osun Chapter, Dr. Olatunde Oyebiyi while stating the above maintained that this will promote a better society.
According to Oyebiyi, “this present administration has announced publicly that it would implement the deployment of professional counsellors, then they should make it urgent.
“These days, the rate of riots in schools is alarming, we hear of schools fighting one another, this is caused by lack of proper guidance which escalates. When they graduate, they still cause nuisance in the society.
“Most of the issues could have been resolved with counselling psychology. Not everyone should go through the conventional disciplinary actions, counselling should be part of the process of discipline.”
Dr Oyebiyi lamented the alarming rate of violence in the state, saying “Social and personal issues are treated in the school counselling packages which helps them to excel in their chosen career and divert their attention from smoking, truancy while reorientating them and exposing them to available opportunities.”
