REA commissions 440kWp for 2,500 households in Cross River
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has officially commissioned a 440kWp interconnected mini-grid in the communities of Etomi, Agbokim, Abia, and Bendeghe in Etung Local Government Area, Cross River State.
The initiative is designed to accelerate the development of Nigeria’s interconnected mini-grid market and provide clean energy access to approximately 125,000 beneficiaries.
Implemented under the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS), this landmark project is part of a €9.3 million in-kind grant initiative funded by the European Union and supported by the German Cooperation. It is expected to provide reliable, clean, and sustainable energy to these underserved communities, significantly contributing to their socio-economic growth.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Prince Eka Williams. Other notable attendees included the Permanent Secretary of Cross River State, the Chairman of Etung Local Government, the District Head, and community leaders.
In his address, Governor Otu expressed deep appreciation for the project, noting its potential to transform the state’s socio-economic landscape.
“This mini-grid project is a landmark achievement for Cross River State. It not only provides sustainable energy access to the communities of Etomi, Agbokim, Abia, and Bendeghe but also creates opportunities for growth and development.
“The Cross River State Government is committed to supporting further initiatives like this to ensure that every community in the state has access to reliable and affordable electricity,” he stated.
The governor urged the benefiting communities to take an active role in maintaining and managing the project to ensure its long-term sustainability. He highlighted the importance of community ownership, calling on local leaders and residents to safeguard the infrastructure and prevent vandalism.
He also encouraged the communities to explore innovative ways to maximise the mini-grid’s benefits, including establishing small businesses that can thrive with reliable electricity. By fully leveraging the opportunities created by the mini-grid, these communities can set a model for self-sufficiency and economic growth in the region.
The governor reassured residents of the state government’s continued support, pledging to work closely with the REA and other stakeholders to maximise the project’s impact. He further reaffirmed his commitment to the e-HEART initiative, which aims to use sustainable energy solutions to enhance vital sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture in rural areas.
Prince Otu emphasised the integration of the mini-grid project into the e-HEART framework, assuring the communities of the government’s continued support in expanding energy access and fostering long-term development in Cross River State.
The Managing Director/CEO of the REA, represented by the Director of the Rural Electrification Fund, Ngozi Chimdi-Ejiogu, extended gratitude to all stakeholders who played a role in bringing the project to fruition. He acknowledged the German Cooperation, European Union, and GIZ for their financial support towards the IMAS initiative.
Additionally, he praised the contributions of the Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Fund Directorate, the Project Lead and team members, Darway Coast Limited (the project developer), and the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) for ensuring seamless integration into the national grid.
“This project is not just about infrastructure; it is about empowering the communities of Etomi, Agbokim, Abia, and Bendeghe with the transformative power of sustainable energy.
“The mini-grid will enhance local economic activities, support small businesses, improve education and healthcare services, and ultimately uplift the quality of life for residents,” he stated.
Mr Augustine Obinna, a representative of PHEDC, also highlighted the project’s significance.
“We are proud to have played a part in ensuring the seamless integration of the mini-grid into the national grid. This initiative is a testament to the power of partnerships in driving progress. By collaborating with the REA, Darway Coast Limited, and other stakeholders, we have provided a solution that not only supplies power but also empowers communities.
“This mini-grid will support local businesses, enhance education, and improve healthcare services, ultimately creating a brighter future for the residents of these communities,” he stated.
He underscored the need for community ownership and accountability to guarantee the sustainability of the project.
Local leaders and residents, including HRH Ntufm Raphael Ekuri Agbor, expressed their gratitude for the project’s positive impact on their lives. They also called for collective efforts to protect the infrastructure and eliminate darkness from their communities.
Representatives from GIZ, including Mr Eckhard Heine, also attended the event and spoke about the broader significance of the initiative.
“This mini-grid is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when governments, development partners, and local communities collaborate to address energy access challenges.
“GIZ remains committed to supporting such initiatives as we work collectively towards a sustainable and prosperous future,” Heine remarked.
Beyond powering homes, the newly commissioned 440kWp mini-grid will provide electricity to local businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities, creating a foundation for economic and social development.
The REA is also working in collaboration with the Cross River State government to explore further decentralised energy solutions, including additional mini-grids and solar power systems, to extend energy access across the state.
Reaffirming its commitment to expanding energy access across Nigeria, the REA continues to implement renewable energy projects aimed at bridging the country’s energy gap, reducing poverty, and driving long-term sustainable development.
