Protest: UNIBEN resumes on Monday, requires students to submit sworn affidavits

The University of Benin will reopen on August 11 after being closed due to student protests. The closure, announced by the university’s Senate on July 4, was prompted by student unrest over prolonged power outages on campus.

According to a circular from the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, students are to return to their residence halls on Sunday, with classes resuming on Monday. During the closure, the university addressed issues related to electricity, water supply, and dormitory renovations.

The Senate decided to reopen the university following meetings on July 23 and 24, 2024, in alignment with the Governing Council, key stakeholders, and a review of the national situation.

Returning students are required to submit a sworn affidavit of good conduct. This affidavit must be uploaded to their Kofa page and a hard copy given to their departmental course adviser within two weeks of resumption. Non-compliance may lead to the withholding of academic results.

Bobola assured students that the issues leading to the closure have been resolved and encouraged them to adhere to the resumption conditions to avoid any repercussions.
