As Nigeria continues to grapple with the economic challenges confronting the nation, the Vice Chancellor (VC)of Rivers State University (RSU), Prof Nlerum Okogbule has tasked the newly inaugurated executive of Nigerian Economic Society (NES), Rivers State Chapter to proffer solution to the lingering problems in the country.
The VC gave the charge at the inauguration of new executive of NES in Port Harcourt.
Represented by the Head Department of Mass Communication RSU,Prof Godwin Okon, the VC stressed the need for NES as a professional body to find solution to myriad of problems confronting the nation. He equally urged the group to enthrone discipline and sanctity in their activities, especially now that our core values are being eroded in the society.
“As a professional body,I implore you to put on your thinking cap, with a view to proffering solutions to some of the challenges that serve as clogs in the wheels of our economic progress as a nation. I urge you also,in the face of eroding values,to accord sanctity to excellence without any wavering. This no doubt is the only way the profession of your discipline will be accorded integrity and honour,” Prof Okogbule said.
In his speech, the chairman of the occasion and immediate past Director of University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Business School, Prof Okey Onuchukwu congratulated the new executive on their successful election. He frowned at some lecturers who do not belong to their professional bodies and as such do not participate in the affairs of their professional organizations. Prof Onuchukwu urged the new officers to right the wrong.
In her goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of budget and Economic Planning, Mrs Titilayo commended the newly elected officers and charged them to live above board.
In his acceptance speech on behalf of the newly elected executive shortly after their swearing in, the chairman, Prof Godly Otto thanked the members for their support in electing them. He assured them that the new executive will not betray the confidence reposed in them.
He called on government and other corporate bodies to always hire the services of professionals for optimal productivity.
Other newly inaugurated executive members include, Dr William Nzidee (1st Vice Chairman), Dr Dennis Ewubare (Gen.Secretary), Dr Dennis Nwanyanwu(Pub. Secretary) and Mrs Better Jack (Fin.Secretary), among others.
