Prof Owunari emerges as UNIPORT VC

The Professor of Pharmacology, Owunari Georgewill, has been appointed the new substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt(UNIPORT).
He is a medical doctor and Professor of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt.
Prof Georgewill was said to have emerged after a keenly contested screening involving 12 contestants for the top job at the university.
He was former Deputy Provost of the College of Health Sciences. He has become second indigene of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area(AKULGA)of Rivers State to be appointed VC of UNIPORT. The appointment came on the heels the Emeritus, Professor Nimi Briggs who also hails from the AKULGA axis.
Chairman of the Governing Council of the University, Sen. Andrew Uchendu made this known after a meeting of the University Board on Friday.
Uchendu who said the new VC was appointed after series of screening, urged him to pilot the affairs of the school to the best of his ability.
“I want to assure all of you that we meticulously complied with the full provisions of the Act on the selection of the Vice Chancellor of the University. After interviewing about twelve of them we found three of them appointable.
“For the first time in my life I have received a delegation of the President to act on his behalf and on behalf of the President, I want to announce to all of us that the Council of the University has considered the report of the selection board and approved the appointment of Professor Georgewill Owunari as the 9th Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt.”
Prof. Owunari takes over from Professor Stephen Okududu who was appointed last year on acting capacity,” he said.
On his part, Prof. Owunari expressed gratitude to the Council for finding him worthy for the appointment. He pledged to discharge his duties. studiously.
