Meanwhile in hopeful turns,  the  PDP has expressed confidence that its candidate, Atiku, is coasting to victory in the Presidential elections held on Saturday.

The main opposition party hinging its confidence in the preliminary reports from the field and results so far announced, said it is evident that Atiku is securing the highest number of valid votes cast as well as the statutory 25 percent in at least two third of the States of the Federation to ultimately brace the tape on the first ballot.

This was contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja, on Sunday.

He said, “Our Party appreciates Nigerians from across the country for putting their avowed solidarity and support for Atiku Abubakar into action by coming out enmasse to give their votes to the PDP, irrespective of ethnicity, creed, age and even political affiliations.

“From preliminary results, it is clear that Atiku Abubakar’s message of hope, unity, security and rebuilding of our nation has been positively received by Nigerians who are eager to embrace a new era under a purposeful leadership which the PDP and Atiku Abubakar embody.

“The PDP assures Nigerians that the hope which Atiku Abubakar symbolises as well as the very onerous task of unifying and returning our country to the path of stability, national cohesion and economic prosperity will soon begin.

“Our Party therefore calls on INEC to ensure very transparent and credible collation process in such a manner that guarantees that all votes count and that the Will of the people is respected.

“INEC should not only ensure prompt uploading of results but also continue to make the result viewing portal available to the public in the interest of transparency.

“The PDP congratulates Nigerians for peaceful elections despite the threats, resort to violence and desperation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to scuttle the process, while urging them to remain calm and resilient until the final declaration of results.”

Results from polling units are safe — INEC

…blames IReV challenges on technical hitches

Meanwhile,  INEC has allayed fears of Nigerians over glitches in its processes, assuring that results from Polling Units are safe, on both the Bimodal Voters  Accreditation System (BVAS) and INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

The Commission gave the assurance in a statement  by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee,  Mr Festus Okoye, in Abuja on Sunday.

Okoye said  the Commission was aware of challenges with the IReV and its technical team were working assiduously to solve all outstanding challenges with the portal.

“Unlike in off-season elections where the portal was used, it has been relatively slow and unsteady.

“The commission regrets this setback, especially because of the importance of IReV in our results management process.

“The problem is totally due to technical hitches related to scaling up the IReV from a platform for managing off-season, state elections, to one for managing nationwide general elections.

“It is indeed not unusual for glitches to occur and be corrected in such situations,” he said.

Okoye assured Nigerians that the challenges were not due to any intrusion or sabotage of INEC systems, and that the IReV remained  well-secured.

“Our technical team is working assiduously to solve all the outstanding problems, and users of the IReV would have noticed improvements since last night.

“We also wish to assure Nigerians that results from the Polling Units, copies of which were issued to political parties, are safe on both the BVAS and the IReV portal.

“These results cannot be tampered with and any discrepancy between them and the physical results used in collation will be thoroughly investigated and remediated, in line with Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022.”

Okoye said that Nigeria fully appreciated the concerns of the public on the situation and welcomed various suggestions that it had received from concerned Nigerians.

He said while that was being appreciated, it was important to avoid statements and actions that could heat up the polity at this time or promote disaffection toward the commission.

“We take full responsibility for the problems and regret the distress that they have caused the candidates, political parties and the electorate,” Okoye said.

Desist from inflammatory statements, INEC cannot be bullied – APC

Meanwhile, as Nigerians await the results of the 2023 presidential election, the APC has warned opposition parties to desist from heating up the polity through some incitive comments faulting the ongoing electoral process across the Country.

The APC said this in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Chief Spokesperson, Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyam, SAN on Sunday.

Keyamo reminded the opposition parties of the Peace Accord signed twice by all Political parties and urged them to abide by such by placing the national interest above personal ambitions.

He asked them not to distract INEC from carrying out its constitutional duties while calling on the International Observers and friends of Nigeria to remain focused on the process as it unfolds.

The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to some incendiary comments by spokespersons of the opposition parties, notably the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) regarding the yet-to-be-announced results of the elections that were held yesterday.

“Some of them have threatened fire and brimstone if their own version of some concocted results are not announced in a bid to be the judge, jury and executioner in this election.

“Similarly, to rile up their supporters against the country, they play up some isolated incidents of violence in our strongholds, whereas we have tons of videos of massive electoral malpractices like violence against non-LP supporters, forcing and guiding women and children to thumb-print ballot papers for LP and massive thumb-printing of ballot papers by both PDP and LP supporters in some parts of the country.

“In addition, in one breath one of the spokespersons of the PDP complained about a certain headline in a newspaper about early results, yet in condemning the newspaper, he also makes unfounded claims about the yet-to-be released results.

“On our part, we have decided to be calm to await the official announcement of the results and to pursue any grievance (if any) in a lawful manner. But we shall not sit back and allow such unguided comments to gain grounds in order to foist a particular narrative on our citizens and the international community.

“Recall that all parties signed the Peace Accord twice before the eyes of the world. Now is the time to abide by the terms of that accord and show love for country over and above personal ambitions.

“We have all campaigned hard and strong. The Nigerian people have listened to all of us and made their decisions. Now is the time to hear the voices of Nigerians as the results are released and not our own voices.

“The body officially designated to reflect the voices of Nigerians is the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). No Party can bully them by threats to do its own bidding. Neither will the APC be cowed into silence by this disgusting antics of the opposition parties.

“We call on the International Observers and friends of Nigeria not to be distracted, but to focus on the process as it unfolds.”
