By Dave Okpogadie, Asaba

The South should produce the next president of Nigeria in 2023 in the spirit of fareness and equity. The Kaduna state governorship aspirant on the platform of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Shehu Sani said this in Asaba at a public lecture.

Senator Sani was a guest speaker at a two day seminar/ workshop organized in Asaba, Delta State by Asaba correspondents chapel of Nigeria Union of journalists with theme , “Good Governance and Democratic Sustainability.”

He noted that it was wrong for those who clamour for quota system to go against rotational system, adding that only rotational presidency could instill sense of belonging among Nigerians and the same time forging unity.

“Why should people accept a quota system but reject rotation of power? One part of the country should not lump its population strength over ether other”.

Senator Sani also observed that many Nigerians desire to have a peaceful and united Nigeria but pointed out that not the anthem or the flag would give that to Nigeria but equity and justice.

Accoding to him,  “It is time we tell ourselves the truth, if we want a united country we must imbibe the idea of rotation of power.”

He berated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for failure to provide quality and credible opposition, describing them as too elitist and cowardly to protest the bad policies of APC led government at the centre.

Senator Shehu Sani also remarked that about 80 percent of the presidential aspirants in the 2023 general elections are not serious but noted that Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu has shown high level seriousness in APC.

He added that many of these aspirants that have obtained forms to run for the presidency did that to attract attention and lobby for ministerial and other appointments.

Earlier in his remarks at the occasion, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state commended members of the Asaba correspondent chapel for being very diligent in their duty and their refusal to oblige those trying to peddle falsehood.

The governor, who was represented at the occasion by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, called on the general public to be actively involved in the electoral process.

In his own remarks, Chairman of Asaba correspondents chapel, Mr. Dominic Adewole said the success of next year election is largely dependent on the observance of the provision of the new electoral act by the INEC.

Mr. Adewole said the sustainance of Nigeria democracy beyond 2023 depends on the effective implementation of the electoral act saying that irregularities associated with the election would be reduced to the barest minimum.
