Pope Francis calls for olympic peace

Pope Francis has urged for an Olympic truce during the upcoming Paris Games, highlighting the Games’ historical role as promoters of peace rather than conflict.

“The Olympic Games, in ancient times, introduced a wise truce during the games,” noted the Catholic Church leader in a message published on Friday.

“In these turbulent times, where global peace faces serious threats, I strongly appeal to everyone to honor this truce,” emphasized the 87-year-old pontiff.

Francis underscored the universal language of sport, transcending borders, languages, nationalities, and religions, fostering unity, dialogue, and mutual acceptance.

“The Olympic Games in Paris could serve as a unique opportunity for encounters, even among nations experiencing conflict and turmoil,” he remarked.

The tradition of the Olympic truce dates back to ancient Greece, ensuring safe travel for athletes seven days before and after the games.

This year, the Paris Olympics will run from July 26 to August 11, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.
