Politicking threatens governance in Rivers, as three Commissioners resign
The recent political crisis in Rivers State is threatening Governance in the state, Nigerian NewsDirect can authoritatively report.
With recent defection and declaration of 27 assembly as seats vacant at the Assembly, Nigerian NewsDirect research team investigated that this latest development will affect the formation of a quorum necessary to pass important decisions.
With the absence of Assembly members, legislative committees intended to develop policies and act as checks to departments and Ministries of the government are also rendered inactive.
Also, three members of the State Executive Council have resigned their appointments.
The Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Social welfare and Commissioner for Works reportedly resigned yesterday.
Nigerian NewsDirect reports that irreconcilable political differences between Fubara and Wike had created tension and division in the state, leading to an attempt by the State Assembly to impeach the governor.
Earlier, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr.Nysome Wike said his rift with Governor Fubara is purely political.
The FCT Minister vowed to remain politically relevant and maintain his structure.
In the process of this tussle, the House of Assembly complex was bombed in the process.
Wike accused Fubara of orchestrating the burning of a section of the State House of Assembly complex.
He claimed that Fubara took the step after learning about an impeachment attempt against him (Governor Fubara).
Amidst criticism of the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has clarified the reason for the demolition of the State’s House of Assembly complex.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Joe Johnson, the Governor said the Assembly lost its structural integrity during the attack and burning down of the complex hence necessitating the demolition.
According to him, “After the inspection of the fire incident on the assembly complex to ascertain the extent of damage on the complex, experts were invited to assess structural integrity of the complex and they advised that the facility be rebuilt.”
The Governor said the experts did not only advise for the rebuilding of the complex but also sounded a note of warning that continued usage of the assembly complex could be very dangerous and risky.
He noted that he was left with no option, but to demolish and rebuild the complex.
“Based on that, an alternative location was given to the lawmakers to carry out their legislative business,” He explained.
Our Correspondent reported that the demolition exercise commenced Wednesday, caterpillars and other earth moving equipment were seen excavating and pulling down the one of the most cherished Assembly Complex in Nigeria after the National Assembly.
