Police urge caution following mob killing of couple in Imo state

The Imo State Police Command has issued a stern warning against vigilantism following the mob killing of a couple in Orogwe, Owerri West Local Government Area, on Monday. The police have urged the public to refrain from taking justice into their own hands and to instead cooperate with law enforcement officials.

Henry Okoye, the Public Relations Officer for the Imo State Police Command, emphasized that justice will not be served through mob actions. He stated that suspects should be handed over to the police for thorough investigation. “Allow the police to perform their duties,” Okoye said. “Our team has been deployed to investigate and apprehend those responsible for this tragic incident.”

According to reports, an angry mob set fire to an unidentified couple in the Orogwe-Ohii area of Owerri-West LGA on Monday. Sources indicate that the couple had been involved in criminal activities, including motorcycle theft. The couple was reportedly caught while attempting to steal a motorcycle from a motorcyclist using a firearm.

A local source, who requested anonymity, revealed that the couple was known in the community but their criminal activities were not widely known until their capture. The source also mentioned that many people had lost motorcycles to theft, creating heightened tension in the area.

The community had been on high alert, and when the couple was caught in the act, the anger of the youths and local vigilantes led them to bypass the police and take matters into their own hands. The exact origin of the couple remains unclear.

As the investigation continues, many youths have fled the area out of fear of potential police action related to the ongoing probe.
