Police task media professionals on credible, reliable information

Poice Command in Ebonyi has urged media professionals to embrace investigative journalism that would curb insecurity, not only in the state but the country in general.

The Police Commissioner in the state, Mr Aliyu Garba, stated this while receiving the Correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi chapter, on Monday in Abakaliki.

The commissioner described information as key to day-to-day activities of security operatives.

“Police need credible and reliable information, and journalists, as the engine of public enlightenment, need to do more on the investigative aspect to enhance credibility,” he stated.

Garba expressed his command’s commitment to partnering with the media in its efforts at fulfilling its mandate of protecting the lives and property of the citizenry.

Speaking earlier, Chairman of the chapel, Mr Samson Nwafor, said that partnership between the police and the media had become necessary to ensure credible and reliable information that would help address the current security challenges.

According to Nwafor, the importance of journalists to national development could not be over-emphasised.

“We must commend the police commissioner on what his command has been doing to make Ebonyi uncomfortable to criminals,” he said.
