Police rescue six children in Lagos
The Lagos State Police Command has successfully rescued six children who were left unattended in a residential building within an estate in the Ejigbo area of the state.
The children, who were found in a distressing state of isolation, had been left alone by their mother, who is reportedly receiving medical treatment abroad.
According to the police, the disturbing incident came to light on Tuesday, when officers received a tip-off at approximately 12 p.m. that the six minors, aged between seven and thirteen, had been staying alone in the house for an undisclosed period.
Promptly acting on the information, the police moved swiftly to the scene, securing the children’s safety and well-being.
In a statement issued by the police, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed that the case was initially handled by officers at the Ejigbo Police Station but has now been transferred to the Gender Unit in Ikeja for further investigation.
“The children have been rescued and are now currently under protective care provided by the Ministry of Youth and Social Development,” Hundeyin revealed to journalists.
“We are in the process of contacting the mother, and investigations are ongoing to gather more information regarding the circumstances surrounding this case.”
The children, who were reportedly in a vulnerable and unsupervised condition, have been placed in a safe environment while authorities continue to piece together the full details of the situation.
Authorities are now focused on determining if any form of neglect or criminal negligence was involved in the incident, and whether the caregiver failed to uphold their responsibilities in the care of the minors.
Residents in the area have expressed their concerns about the case, highlighting the importance of child welfare, particularly in situations where parents or guardians are not physically present to provide care for their children.
The Lagos State Police Command has pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses, with special attention to the legal and welfare measures being taken to ensure the children’s safety.
