Police man dead, one injured as gunmen bomb checkpoint in Anambra
The Anambra State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for those responsible for killing and injuring two police officers during an attack on a checkpoint at Omata Junction, Nnewi-Oba Road, in Idemili South Local Government Area.
The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. on Friday when the attackers threw explosive devices at the officers stationed at the checkpoint. The motive behind the assault remains unclear as of this report.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the attack and stated that Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam has ordered a thorough search for the suspects.
Ikenga reported, “Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam has directed a manhunt for the gunmen responsible for the attack at the checkpoint on August 9, 2024. The operation, led by the Assistant Commissioner of the Nnewi Area Command, is collaborating with local residents to identify and capture the perpetrators.
“In the ensuing exchange of fire, one officer was killed by an explosive thrown by the attackers, and another is in serious condition and receiving medical care. A police team has taken over the area, and further updates will be provided as they become available.”
