Police killed my 22-yr-old son, cousin after collecting N200,000 for their release — Witness

An elderly man in Rivers State,Mr Koteinbo Herbert has accused the officers of the Inspector General of Police(IGP) Monitoring Unit at Borokiri of killing his 22-year old son,Thankgod Herbert and his cousin, Nelson Ajumogobia after collecting N200,000 out of N500,000 they demanded for their release.

Koteinbo made the allegation in Port Harcourt,while testifying before the Rivers State Judicial Commission of Inquiry Into Alleged Acts of Violence, Torture and Brutality Against Rights of Citizens by the disbanded SARS Operatives.

The petitioner said his late son accompanied by his cousin went to collect debt owed him from their fish supply transaction on 19/7/2016 only to be arrested by the officers of the IGP Monitoring Unit stationed at Borokiri ,who later demanded the sum of N500,000 for bail and after he struggled to pay N200,000,he was warned not to come there again and till today the boys have not been released.

Herbert said he approached the Panel to seek for justice on the matter.

The Chairman of the Commission,Rt Justice Chukwunenye Uriri after listening to submissions from counsels in the case,slated the matter for conference after adjournment.

Another Petitioner,Evang Simon Amaha told the Commission that his brother,John Amaha was shot and killed by SARS Operatives at Evo Road Junction,in GRA Phase 2,Port Harcourt, while controlling traffic on 4/3/2019.

Amaha said the killers of his brother accused him of being a mad man and was wasting their time. According to him,it took the assistance of police officers at Abacha Road to remove his decomposing body from the scene of the incident and deposited at BMSH mortuary.

The witness said his brother has since been buried at his country  home in Kogi State. He said he is seeking justice for his murder and N50m compensation to at least cushion the effect of liabilities his death has left behind.

The Commission adjourned the matter for conference.
