On Monday, the Nigeria Police Force announced that Andrew Wynne, a British national also known as Andrew Povich, and Nigerian Lucky Obiyan are wanted for their alleged roles in a plot to overthrow the country’s democratically elected government.
According to the police, Wynne has been accused of creating a network of sleeper cells aimed at destabilizing the nation. The police further claimed that he used a rented space at Labour House in Abuja, where he set up a school under the guise of a legitimate business to conceal his activities.
Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi stated that a thorough investigation has uncovered that Wynne and his collaborators, including nine suspects already detained, received substantial foreign funding to incite chaos and undermine the government. These suspects are alleged to have orchestrated violent protests, spread misinformation, and engaged in other illegal activities to create unrest and justify their coup attempt.
Adejobi revealed that Wynne provided financial and operational support to his Nigerian associates, urging them to provoke violence against police and military targets to spark an international backlash against the Nigerian government. These actions, he noted, contravene the Terrorism (Prevention) Act of 2011 and other laws.
Wynne and Obiyan are now on the run, with efforts underway to locate and apprehend them globally.
