Police foil kidnap or robbery attempt in Delta
Police in Delta said on Tuesday in Warri that they foiled a kidnap or robbery attempt at Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.
Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, told journalists that the suspected kidnappers or robbers engaged police operatives who were on patrol in conjunction with local vigilantes in a gun duel.
He added that the suspects escaped with various degrees of injuries sustained in the duel.
“On May 23, suspected kidnappers came with a speedboat as usual with the intention of causing mayhem and kidnapping unsuspecting victims.
“Officers and men of Oghara Division in conjunction with local vigilantes, who had already put proactive measures in place, resisted them by way of engaging the criminals in a gun duel.
“The suspected kidnappers who could not withstand the firepower of the police, jumped into the river and escaped with possible bullet injuries,’’ he said.
Bright said one pump action gun with live cartridges was recovered from the suspects while efforts were on-going to bring them to book.
He said that in a related development, the Command nabbed four suspected cultists in Warri on May 22.
A locally-made gun and one live cartridge and a cutlass were recovered from the suspects.
“One of those nabbed led the police to another suspect who gave him the gun and to other members who had earlier escaped,” Bright said.
Bright added that the suspects confessed to be members of senior and junior ‘Eiye’ cult groups.
Army reschedules POP of 80 Regular Recruit Intake
The Passing Out Parade (POP) for the 80 Regular Recruit Intake Parade has been rescheduled to May 29.
The postponed is occasioned by the death of the former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen Ibrahim Attahiru.
Capt. Audu Arigu, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Depot Nigeria Army, made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday in Zaria.
It would be recalled that the ceremony was originally scheduled for May 22, with the late COAS as Chief Reviewing Officer and Special Guest of Honour.
He was also slated to commission a new medical centre for the depot as part of the event.
However, the event could not hold due to the ill-fated plane crash that cut short the lives of the COAS and 10 others on the evening of May 21.
According to Arigu, Depot Nigerian Army has rescheduled the event to Saturday (May 29).
He noted that the POP was one of the series of activities lined up to mark the end of the rigorous training involved in the process of making of a soldier.
He said the event was the climax of Recruits intensive training in Depot Nigerian Army, adding that the ceremony showcases the height of military discipline and regimentation.
