Jacob Ogodo, Abakaliki
The Assistant Inspector General of police(AIG), in charge of zone 9, Ene Okon said Nigerian Police Force has deployed four mobile units to Ebonyi as contained in its operation restore peace initiative launched in Enugu yesterday
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of zone 9 unit made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abakaliki during a courtesy call on Governor. David Umahi.
Okon said the units which would be coordinated by an AIG would collaborate with the State’s Commissioner of police and report to the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the South East zone.
“We appeal that you assist in ensuring adequate welfare for the officers because they are going to operate in the rural areas and with the support of the government and the people, we would overcome these challenges soon.
He urged traditional rulers in the state to implore on youths especially those with separatist belief, to shun killing of policemen and other security agents.
“Killing of security operatives and destruction of public infrastructure cannot guarantee their agitations as Igbos are not known for killings and others forms of violence.
Okon who earlier addressed stakeholders in a town hall said that funds to be used in reconstructing destroyed infrastructure would have been used for developmental purposes.
Governor David Umahi in his response thanked the AIG for the visit but urged the police to investigate activities of disgruntled politicians in solving the state’s security problems.
“The situation has gone beyond the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) which has severally denied attacking security agents and destroying public infrastructure.
He urged the police to stop the indiscriminate arrest of his aides and supporters when fake news which escalate security tensions, are not checked.
“The Ebube Agu would arrest any government supporter or opposition member who causes crisis in the state. “Let me condemn very seriously the killing of security agencies. I have said it severally, burning of police stations. Yesterday, INEC two offices in Ezzs North and Ebonyi local government areas and even burning of a filling station that I owned before now two days ago and attempted assassination of the publicity secretary of APC.”
