Police arraign man, over alleged unlawful possession of Indian hemp

A 37-year-old man, Tosin Oyesanya, alleged to have been in unlawful possession of Cannabis sativa (Indian Hemp), on Wednesday, was arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a one-count charge of unlawful possession of Indian Hemp.

The prosecutor, Insp Olumide Bamigbade, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan.19 at about 2:00 p.m, in Ado-Ekiti.

Bamigbade informed the court that the defendant was arrested while in possession of substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

He said that the offence contravened section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act 2004.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr. Sunday Balogun, urged the court to grant his client bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Olubunmi Bamidele, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until Feb.23 for hearing.
