Police arraign man, 25, over alleged conversion of fund, threat to life

The police on Thursday, arraigned a 25-year-old man, Uche Ogbonna, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged conversion of fund, threat to life.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conversion of fund and threat to life.

The prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in 2013 in Ado-Ekiti.

Okunade alleged that the defendant collected goods valued at N123, 000 belonging to one Frank Godwin, with an agreement to pay back as soon as he sold the goods, which he later converted to his own.

He also alleged that the defendant threatened to deal with the complainant, if he asked for his money again.

According to him, the offence contravenes Sections 388 and punishable under Section 390 and 96 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the defendant, Mrs Korede Onipede, urged the court to grant the defendant bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adedayo Oyebanji, in his ruling, granted the defendant N50,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

Oyebanji said the surety shall provide evidence of real landed property and adjourned the case until Feb. 8 for hearing.
