Poison: How man, wife die of family land dispute in Edo

A man simply identified as Pius Isi has, alongside his wife, Mrs. Isi Omoze, died mysteriously of what is suspected to be poisonous.

Mr. Pius, who happened to be the first son of his family was said to have inherited a large expanse of land from his late father which he used to farm livestock, economic crops, thereby yielding much from the farm.

Dissatisfied on how their elder brother inherited the large farmland as the first son, and going by the successes recorded in terms of farming, his siblings were said to have plotted against him (Pius).

According to investigation, the late Pius’ siblings who distanced themselves from him due to the land he inherited from their late father as the first son, were said to have visited him in the farm while working, pretending to be in for a settlement.

An insider who does not want his name mentioned, said two of the late Pius’ siblings came to him, greeted him and he in return ushered them to the farm hut where they offered him local gin (as peace offering) for them to drink together, not knowing that they were on a mission of eliminating him.

“Pius, his wife and only Son were said to have been working in his farm when two of his siblings came to the farm and said they wanted to have a word with him and being his siblings, he left what he was doing and took them to the farm hut. There they had discussions, and his siblings apologised for their actions in the past.

“Thereafter, they brought out local gin in the gathering where the late Pius and his late wife were. The couple drank from the alcohol.

“As all these were happening, their only son, Israel was with them. He was, however, not allowed to take from the local gin brought by his uncles because he was too young to take alcohol,” the insider narrated.

The insider continued, “Knowing well that they (Mr. Pius’ siblings) have successfully poisoned their brother and his wife, they sent the young Israel on an errand to the community, and before he returned, they had left the hut. He came back and met his parents struggling to survive.

“As a young boy who couldn’t help his parents all by himself, he had to run back to the community for help. The community people who came with Isreal met the couple gasping for breath. The community people had to rush the couple to a local medicine man because if they were to rush them to the hospital it may be too late.

“But unfortunately, as they rushed the couple to the local medicine man for treatment, the husband died shortly after treatment commenced. The wife too gave up the ghost that night, our source added.

According to findings, as the couple died while they were being administered local medicine, one of the suspects showed up at the scene, pretending not to be aware of the cause of the couple’s death.

The suspect was said to have attempted to take away the only son of Mr. Pius to the family home with the promise to the villagers that he would take care of the young boy since he has turned orphan but the boy was said to have run away from his uncle to an unknown destination.

Another source in the village who confided in our correspondent: “Yes, after the demise of the couple, their only child was taken by one of the late Pius’ younger brother. He promised the whole villagers present when he wanted to take him away to their family house that he will be well taken care of but we later heard that the boy ran away from his uncle’s custody because it was revealed to him that his father’s siblings wanted to eliminate him too especially as he is a male child.

“I think some persons were worried by all this information, so they had to aide the boy to escape from this village. As I speak to you, we don’t know where the young boy is. He is nowhere to be found in any of the nearby villages. But I wish him well wherever he may be on this planet,” our source said .
