The Plateau Fire Service Directorate says it recorded 105 fire outbreaks in the state between January and October.
Mr Polit Caleb, the acting Director of the Service disclosed this at the opening of the 2022 Fire Safety Week on Thursday in Jos.
He the service responded to all distress calls on fire outbreaks, adding that the incidents led to loss of lives and property worth over N2.7 billion.
”Through our timely response to some of the fire outbreaks, we were able to save lives and property worth over N4.3 billion in the state,”he said
Caleb explained that the fire safety week was organised to sensitise residents to the dangers of fire outbreak and ways to avert it.
”This event is organised to conduct massive public fire education campaign across the state.
”The fire safety week is strategically designed to meet the need of our citizens and sensitise.
”It is our believe that this safety week will help to stem the increasing tide of fire outbreaks in the state in recent times,”he said
The acting director thanked the state government for the support g accorded the service and called for more, particularly in the areas of logistics, modern equipment and befitting office accommodation.
Caleb called on residents to take precautionary measures towards preventing fire outbreaks, particularly during the dry season.
”As the harmattan set in, you must take precaution to prevent fire outbreak; switch off all electronic gadgets when leaving your homes and offices.
“Clear your environment of bushes and ensure you have a potable fire extinguisher installed in your homes,”he said.
Caleb thanked the staff of the service for their commitment to duty and called on them to do more to minimize fire outbreaks in the state.
Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau while declaring the occasion opened commended the management and staff of the service for their efforts in saving lives and property of citizens.
Represented by Mr Brian Dadi, Commissioner for Housing, promised to provide modern equipment and office accommodation for the service to enhance their performance.
