Phase out wooden boats — NIWA Board Chair urges Oyebamiji
The newly appointed Chairman of the Board of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Honourable Musa Sarkin-Adar, has called on the Authority’s management team to phase out wooden boats as part of efforts to reduce accidents on the country’s waterways.
Sarkin-Adar made this appeal during a familiarisation visit to NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, at the Authority’s Liaison Office in Abuja.
While expressing his gratitude for the warm reception, the Chairman encouraged the Authority to expand its efforts in improving water transportation across more states.
He stressed the importance of private sector participation in the development of the inland waterways, noting that the government alone cannot bear the responsibility of advancing the sector.
Additionally, he urged Oyebamiji and his team to work diligently towards leaving a lasting impact, ensuring that their contributions would be remembered positively in history.
In response, Oyebamiji expressed appreciation to the Board Chairman for the visit and acknowledged the dedication of his management team in advancing inland waterway transport.
He stated that he is fortunate to work alongside an experienced and committed team, emphasising that their collective efforts, rather than individual achievements, drive the progress of the sector.
The visit was attended by the entire NIWA management team.
