PEPSA blames protesting LGA staff for waste accumulation in Jos

The General Manager, Plateau State Environmental and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA), Mr Gabriel Bako, has blamed protest by staff of 17 LGAs for waste accumulation in Jos metropolis.

He said the protesters hindered waste disposal trucks from leaving the state government secretariat to evacuate waste in the city.

Bako spoke with the Newsmen on Tuesday in Jos.

He however gave assurance that waste evacuation within the metropolis would commence from Tuesday.

Newsmen reports that the streets within Jos –Bukuru metropolis are full of heaps of garbage, with foul smell emanating from them especially around the Terminus and Ahmadu Bello way.

This is as a result of abandoned waste that has been accumulating since Dec. 2020 .

Some traders and residents who spoke with the Newsmen appealed to the government to commence evacuation of waste to curb spread of diseases.

Plateau chapters of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and National Union of Local Government Employees have staged series of protests over non – implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage.

On its part, government stated that the issue of minimum wage was sacrosanct, and asked the workers to wait for the recommendations of a technical committee set up for the purpose.

Newsmen reports that the protest commenced on Dec. 7, 2020 while the workers were dispersed on Jan. 4 by security personnel.
