PDP governors criticize Wike, calling his threats irresponsible
Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have sharply criticized former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, condemning his recent threats as excessive and irresponsible. On August 24, the PDP Governors’ Forum voiced its support for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and urged the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to recognize him as the rightful leader of the party in the state.
In retaliation, Wike declared over the weekend at the PDP secretariat in Port Harcourt that he would take decisive action against PDP-controlled states that challenge his political influence in Rivers. He warned, “I assure you, while we live, no one will take the PDP structure from us. I hear some governors claim they will seize control and hand it over to someone else. I pity those governors because I will incite unrest in their states. When God grants you peace and you refuse it, you must face the consequences.”
In response, the PDP Governors’ Forum, through its Director General Emmanuel Agbo on Tuesday, denounced Wike’s threats as completely unacceptable. The statement read in part: “The PDP Governors’ Forum, chaired by Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, and all member-governors, have noted with concern the recent statements and threats made by Minister Nyesom Wike. His comments about ‘putting fire’ in PDP-controlled states are unrestrained, irresponsible, and utterly unacceptable as they jeopardize efforts to maintain peace, unity, and mutual respect within the party. It is disheartening to see such behavior from a former member of this esteemed forum.”
The Forum reiterated its commitment to mutual support and solidarity, stressing that the decisions regarding the PDP’s stance in Rivers State, as resolved in meetings held in Enugu and Taraba States, are final and not subject to individual review, regardless of status.
The statement emphasized that the Forum’s position is not personal and does not diminish any stakeholder’s importance. Rather, it underscores their commitment to preserving order and preventing conflicts of loyalty that could distract from governance. The Forum affirmed its dedication to collaborating with the PDP’s NWC to ensure Governor Siminalayi Fubara receives all the rights and privileges due to him as an elected leader of the party, both at the state and national levels.
The governors reaffirmed their commitment to party unity, emphasizing that the PDP has always prioritized collective progress and that their recent actions, including their support for Fubara, reflect their dedication to these core values.
