Sen. Adetokunbo Abiru (APC-Lagos East) on Monday said he had doled out financial support to 1,000 vulnerable residents in his senatorial district.
The senator’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Enitan Olukotun, said that the gesture was in line with Abiru’s promise to alleviate the suffering of the poorest in the district that were adversely affected by coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
According to him, the beneficiaries, which include widows, physically-challenged, aged, women and unemployed youth, were drawn from 98 wards in the senatorial district.
He said that the support scheme, which was in two categories, would run throughout 2021.
“Selected beneficiaries will be getting the assistance bimonthly, and all through the year by way of direct credit to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
“As the representative of the people, I know how many of our constituents, especially the vulnerable, were and are still adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This modest effort in ameliorating the plight of our people is one in the series of other interventions geared towards making life easier for the poor in our midst.
“After the pilot set, which numbers about 1,000 beneficiaries, the second category will be scaled up to 1,200 and we hope to capture more people in future,” he said.
Abiru, who was inaugurated on Dec.15, 2020 after winning Dec. 5, 2020 Lagos-East senatorial bye election, reiterated his vision of attracting development to the district and providing quality representation in the red chamber.
