Oyo/Osun: Customs seizes 1,824kg of Cannabis Sativa hidden in sawdust

The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 2,280 wraps of Cannabis Sativa Hidden in Sawdust, amounting to 1,824 kilograms.

In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Kayode Wey, he highlighted the seizure as evidence of the Command’s dedication to safeguarding public health and safety.

The drugs, artfully concealed within more than 200 sacks of sawdust, were confiscated along the Ilero axis in Oyo State on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

“The capture of these 2,280 wraps of Cannabis Sativa demonstrates the expertise and vigilance of our officers. The smugglers’ effort to hide this illegal substance among 200 sacks of sawdust was a deliberate attempt to avoid detection. Nevertheless, our comprehensive inspections have once again prevented these dangerous drugs from reaching our communities,” Oramalugo stated.

Comptroller Oramalugo revealed that the successful interception resulted from intelligence provided by one of the Command’s anti-smuggling units.

Customs officers, after identifying the 6-tyre DAF truck carrying the contraband, carried out a meticulous inspection that led to uncovering the hidden Cannabis Sativa beneath the sawdust.

Addressing the public health concerns related to Cannabis Sativa, especially among the youth, Oramalugo assured the community that the Command remains steadfast in its efforts to prevent such harmful substances from entering society.

He also disclosed that the confiscated Cannabis Sativa would be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and proper disposal.

The Customs Area Controller encouraged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious drug trafficking or smuggling activities to the nearest Customs office or law enforcement agency.

Oramalugo reaffirmed that the Command would continue to strengthen its efforts against all forms of illegal trade to ensure the safety and welfare of the public.
