Oyo Govt temporarily closes Alao-Akala Highway for weighbridge installation

The Oyo State Government has announced the temporary closure of the 76.67km Alao-Akala Memorial Highway to facilitate the installation of weighbridges.

This initiative was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Professor DahudKehindeShangodoyin, is marked to preserve the integrity of the road.

Professor Shangodoyin explained that the weighbridges will be used to assess the weight of heavy-duty trucks utilising the highway.

“When completed, these weighbridges will help ensure that only trailers within the permissible weights are allowed to use the road after paying the stipulated fees. Trucks exceeding the weight limit will be turned back,” he stated.

He emphasised that the fee payments will apply solely to trailers, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the newly constructed road.

The Alao-Akala Highway serves as a critical link between Ogbomoso and Iseyin, as well as other regions of the state and the country.

Shangodoyin noted that while the road was designed and constructed with quality in mind, it remains a Trunk B Road intended for heavy-duty trucks and articulated vehicles that comply with weight regulations.

“This move is essential to reduce the burden on the road and enhance its longevity,” he added.

The Oyo State Government urges all motorists to comply with the temporary closure and cooperate with ongoing efforts to maintain and protect vital infrastructure in the state.
